Bygone Greatstone in Pictures: 1920s
Prior to the 1920s there was hardly anything to Greatstone at all (more information). In the 1920s the area was predominantly covered by sand dunes and was known as the Greatstone Dunes Estate. It consisted of just a few properties, mainly used as holiday homes, and the original Jolly Fisherman pub.

The sea, English Channel, is on the left. The large building on the
right is what is now the
Post Office and Newsagents. Where the cars are parked on
the Dunes
is the where the current car park and public toilets are situated.

This picture was taken before the Jolly Fisherman was built (c1935) on
the
triangle piece of land north and west of Dunes Road and The Parade.
The building on the left would seem to be the site of the present residential flats?

The Original Jolly Fisherman

 The original Jolly Fisherman pub.
The original Jolly Fisherman pub was located some 2 miles to the south of where the now Jolly Fisherman stands. The site, nothing of which remains today, is part of the Dungeness Nature Reserve to the west of Leonard Road and just before Hull Road. It ceased being a pub when its license was transferred to the present day Jolly Fisherman in c1935.
