Bygone Greatstone in Pictures: 1930s

Very little changed in Greatstone from the 1920s to the 1930s. Some development did start, including the building of the Jolly Fisherman.

The sea would have been behind the photographer with the tide clearly out.

The properties adjacent to the beach were holiday homes, in either The Parade or Coast Drive.
Do you know about where on the beach this photo was taken?
If you do, or have some idea, please let Peter know

Junction of The Parade, Coast Drive and Dunes Road

This picture was taken after the Jolly Fisherman was built in c1935. The building opposite the Jolly
on the east side of The Parade was an earlier public toilet block. The building on
the left would seem to be the site of the present residential flats?

These trains served Greatstone-on-Sea Station, which opened in 1937
and closed in 1967. Please go to our Railway Stations at Greatstone page for more information
