Greatstone Residents Alliance is a new group, with fresh ideas, which aims to provide a unified Greatstone with a much higher profile and its own identity. We consider that this can best be achieved by supporting the creation of Greatstone Parish Council and the unification of Greatstone when Shepway District Council conduct a full Parish Review and Consultation throughout the Parishes of Lydd and New Romney later this year (see Terms of Reference below). We will also, be seeking to ensure that the improvements to Greatstone’s local amenities and infrastructure, which are so desperately needed, are forthcoming through a fairer distribution of the Council Tax Precept than that which currently prevails. We should stress that even if the creation of a new Parish is agreed it is most unlikely that this would take effect before 1st April, 2010. Present Situation Greatstone is at present split into two with the area from Littlestone to Dunes Road coming under New Romney Town Council and the other from Dunes Road up to, but not including, Hull Road falling under the control of Lydd Town Council. (see Greatstone Map) This split within our Community makes absolutely no sense whatsoever and is preventing Greatstone from moving forward. Since 1974 Lydd Town Council have consistently failed to provide any major capital expenditure to Greatstone and Lydd-on-Sea despite an ever increasing Council Tax burden upon its residents. The Coastal Community Group sought to partly restore the balance when they obtained a majority on Lydd Town Council following the May, 2007 Elections, but have now lost considerable public support by not keeping to the mandate that they were given from the electorate and through their inability to provide any significant funds to the Coast whilst establishing Lydd Town Council’s Budget for 2008/2009. Greatstone Parish Council A new Greatstone Parish Council would be unlikely to succeed without the involvement and leadership of experienced professionals, who are used to running a business and its finances. The lack of success of the Coastal Community Group’s Councillors is very disappointing for those of us who voted them into office and with the time for excuses now being over, the electorate have a legitimate right to ask why the improvements and funding that they were promised have failed to materialise? Partnership Greatstone Residents Alliance are prepared to work in partnership with the Coastal Community Group in seeking to obtain the creation of Greatstone Parish Council. However, this will not prevent us from asking those difficult questions that both Lydd Town Council and the Coastal Community Group may prefer us not to ask. Main Greatstone/New Romney Issues From our discussions with local people in the area of Greatstone which is currently served by New Romney Town Council, it appears that unadopted roads and the handling of the expansion plans for Lydd Airport are the two main causes for dissatisfaction. We believe that a unified Greatstone will have a far greater voice on both of these issues and consider that Greatstone Parish Council will have no option, but to listen to its people. Greatstone Resident’s Association Upon the establishment of Greatstone Parish Council, we would propose the creation of a new independent Resident’s Association providing free membership to all households within the new Parish solely to represent the interests of those people. The Greatstone Resident’s Association would have direct access to the Greatstone Parish Council and its strength would be such that our elected Councillors would have to listen or face the prospect of electoral annihilation. Non-political Greatstone Residents Alliance has no political ties whatsoever and are committed to work in the very best interests of each and every single person who has chosen to live and work in our area.
